Who Could Benefit
10 Ways an Accessible Tiny Home Could Help You
or Someone You Know
An Accessible Tiny Home could be an excellent option when...
1. A returning injured vet who owns a traditional older rural home is unable to navigate in his surroundings. An ATH attached to his home could enable his family to remain together and in place.
2. A frail husband normally cared for by his wife is suddenly left alone when she suffers a stroke. He stays in an ATH with available supportive services until other arrangements can be made.
3. A man recovering from hip surgery is discharged from rehab but still is not safe in his home. He continues his recovery in an ATH until he is ready to return home.
4. A teenage daughter diagnosed with MS has difficulty navigating at home and rehab of the house is not feasible. The ATH could be placed on the property or she could rent an available one.
5. The Agency on Aging needs to immediately remove an elder experiencing serious neglect or abuse from her home. Placing her in an ATH with available supportive services is an option.
6. A widow with a moderate income is unable to remain safely at home. She is over income for subsidized housing or help from the nursing home waiver program, but not wealthy enough to pay for assisted living or buy into a continuing care facility. She does not want or need nursing home care. Accessible first-floor apartments are rare.
7. A couple plan to sell their home and buy into an independent living unit in a continuing care facility. The monthly fee is comfortably within their budget. However, the wife suffers a stroke and needs to be in the personal care unit. Now the cost for both is more than they can afford and they would be separated. An ATH designed for a couple would keep them together and be less expensive.
8. A small group of people would like to live in proximity to one another in order to save money on costs for support services, maintain independence, and enjoy a sense of community. A planned cluster of ATHs could provide this!
9. A local agency needs to provide temporary shelters from domestic abuse and a client's needs could not be met in their existing shelters.
10. Those considering building or buying an ATH would like to rent one for a short term to test it out.
For many types of people with a variety of needs, an Accessible Tiny Home could be a solution.
Identifying Local Needs
To gather information and assess specific needs, we're asking organizations that provide direct services to individuals who need accessible housing...
-
What services do you provide to individuals needing accessible housing?
-
What do you see as the most pressing problems or unmet needs?
-
Which actions and/or programs would help meet these needs?
